Developing Intercultural Competence through Language Education

Intercultural competence is embedded into most national language education curricula and into trans-national policies such as the CEFR. However, the role of teachers in facilitating the development of intercultural competence among their students is still evolving, with many areas for further research. In this seminar, we will examine some of the main frameworks of intercultural competence in language education and analyse their usefulness in language education. Next, we will look at links to the CEFR and will introduce the Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters, also produced by the Council of Europe. Finally, we will then hold a discussion on the ways in which teachers can incorporate intercultural learning into their own classroom practice within ever-present time and curriculum constraints.

Yayoi Kusama Curator Talk by Frances Morris

Yayoi Kusama, with a career spanning over half a century, is undoubtedly one of the most prolific Japanese artists of her generation. From paintings to installations, her considerable body of work is very diverse, reflecting her own hybrid identity. Kusama is now Japan’s most prominent contemporary artist and presenting her work to an international audience represents an exciting and ambitious curatorial challenge.

Frances Morris, Curator and Head of Collections (International Art) at Tate Modern has conceived and led a major exhibition project to bring Kusama’s work to Tate Modern. Her long relationship with Kusama and her work has culminated in the major retrospective, Yayoi Kusama, (8 February – 5 June 2012). At this special talk event, Morris will explore Kusama and her work, considering her relevance and significance on both a global and a UK scale. Guiding the audience through her curatorial process, she will map out the exhibition from conception to completion, also reflecting on her own personal journey with Kusama, having had the opportunity to work closely with her and really get under her skin as an artist.

This promises to provide a fantastic complement to the exhibition, offering a refreshing and dynamic perspective, and an opportunity to meet the curator behind what is arguably currently the most talked-about international show in London.

Nippon Connection 2012

12TH JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL NIPPON CONNECTION

From May 2nd to 6th, 2012, you are invited to experience the various facets of Japanese culture in a program that tries to reject ordinary standards. Many of the 142 films are presented as international premieres in Frankfurt am Main and can be watched outside of Japan only at these screenings. In addition, the event offers workshops, parties, exhibitions, lectures, performances, and much more that attracts our visitors besides cinema. Nippon Connection doesn’t seek to guide your view but wants to diffuse it and avoid fixed stereotypes in order to foster openness, interest and tolerance. You are invited to join and watch beyond the screen, to explore and to celebrate a vivid exchange of cultures both with the organisers and with many guests from Japan.

Ho deciso!

Inizio un’altra volta a studiare Giapponese. Lo so, non e’ la prima volta che scrivo su questo Blog che riprendo a studiare Giapponese pero’ questa volta sono determinato . Da domani??? un’ ora di studio al giorno. Vediamo come va a finire questo piano poco realistico. A presto un aggiornamento dei miei progressi.

I’ve taken a very important decision! From tomorrow I’ll start again to study Japanese. I know… it is not the first time that I mention on this Blog that I want to start again Japanese but this time I’m very determined. To start, 1 hour per day of revision. I’ll soon inform you on my progress.

British Museum

La ragazza Giapponese con la quale sono andato al ristorante Coreano voleva visitare il British Museum e cosi` qualche giorno fa` ho deciso di accontentarla. Il British Museum e` uno dei posti piu` interessanti da visitare a Londra ed e` gratuito, cosa da non trascurare ma, a mio parere, non il posto migliore come ‘date’. La giornata comunque e` andata molto bene, ci siamo divertiti molto specialmente a fine serata nel pub. Prossimo incontro, molto presto.

The Japanese girl I recently met wanted to go to see the British Museum so few days ago we went there for a short visit, or better, second date. The British Museum is one of the best attraction in London and is free but, in my opinion, a Museum is not the an ideal place for a date with a pretty girl. However, we had good time especially in a pub after the visit. Next date, very soon.

Lavoro

Settimana veramente molto impegnativa sul fronte lavoro, specialmente questa mattina. Il fatto che sono presissimo al lavoro mi sta rallentando in tutte le altre cose che avevo programmato. Lo studio del giapponese, per esempio, ne risente in maniera evidente ed ormai da qualche giorno e’ passato alle zero ore, o meglio, minuti di studio. L’altra cosa che stavo cercando di sistemare era la ricerca della ragazza Giapponese o Coreana per la stanza che voglio affittare (vedi post precedente), ed anche per questo sono andato abbastanza lentamente in particolare con gli annunci sui vari siti specializzati. Per fortuna, pero’, questa mattina ho ricevuto una telefonata di una ragazza Giapponese che vorrebbe venire a vivere qui da me. Ci siamo messi d’accordo per incontrarci Sabato pomeriggio cosi’ lei puo’ vedere la stanza e l’appartamento e nel caso fosse ancora interessata, se ritengo sia la persona giusta, sistemarsi qui da me. Speriamo bene, sarebbe un problema in meno da sistemare.

Domani spero di avere abbastanza tempo per fare qualche foto durante i festeggiamenti del capodanno Cinese cosi’, se tutto va bene, alla sera pubblichero’ le immagini. A presto.

Hiragana

Oggi ho speso l’intera giornata nel mio appartamento nonostante fuori la temperatura fosse mite (considerando la stagione) e il sole splendeva. Al mattino mi sono messo a sistemare e pulire la mia stanza, la cucina ed il bagno anche perche’ spero presto di trovare un nuovo ‘flat mate’ a cui dare la stanza in affitto. Il pomeriggio e’ stato dedicato principalmente allo studio del Giapponese e come annunciato ieri mi sono messo a studiare gli Hiragana.

Anche se sono passati parecchi anni dall’ultima volta che ho utilizzato gli Hiragana devo dire che me li ricordo piuttosto bene anche se ho un po’ di problemi a scriverli. Entro il fine settimana devo riuscire ad avere dimestichezza sia nel leggerli che nello scriverli.

Obbiettivi per la prossima settimana:

  • Leggere e scrivere gli Hiragana senza problemi
  • Ripassare Lesson 1 e 2 di Minna No Nihongo
  • Studiare Lesson 3 e 4 di Minna No Nihongo
  • Studiare 10 Kanji
